A small but well-known drug company was once accused of selling Viagra and other medications over the Internet that contained a powerful drug called Cialis. But a new study suggests that Viagra may have been a key part of the drug's sales.
A team of researchers published in theJournal of the American Medical Association's Journal of the American Medical Association found that Viagra sold on the Internet was much stronger than the original manufacturer's drug, which was made by Pfizer Inc.
The drugs are sold by prescription only, with many of the drugs being marketed as "erectile dysfunction medications" - a term that includes impotence, erectile dysfunction, and premature ejaculation. Viagra is also marketed as a treatment for impotence, but it is not yet approved for use by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
A team of researchers at the University of California, San Francisco and the University of Southern California were studying the effectiveness of Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
"The results of our study do not appear to support the view that the Viagra-containing drugs may have played a role in the development of the disorder," said study co-author Dr. Steven M. Schumacher, chairman of the UCS School of Medicine, and lead author of the study.
"Further studies are needed to establish the mechanism of action of the drugs," he added.
Schumacher's team recruited 30,000 men and asked them to participate in a double-blind, controlled clinical study of 18,000 patients. The study found that men taking the drugs reported better erections and decreased ejaculatory latency compared to men taking the placebo. The results were published in the journal.
The authors of the study also found that Viagra's safety has been confirmed for several other drugs. A study of the drug was conducted in more than 30 countries and revealed that Viagra's safety had been confirmed for some of the drugs studied.
"We have to recognize that men and their partners may be at an increased risk of experiencing sexual dysfunction, especially when prescribed medications such as Viagra," Schumacher said.
A new study published in's' found that Viagra sales from the Internet were similar to the sales of Viagra in 1998. Viagra sales in the U. S. were $1.5 billion in 1998, while sales in Europe were $2.1 billion. The new study, which included 23,600 men, was published on Saturday. The research was funded by the Department of Defense's National Institute on Aging, National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. The authors are grateful to the following people for their time and expertise in the study: Dr. Schumacher, former president of Pfizer Inc., former president of Pfizer, and former executive vice president of the drug industry.
The study was funded by the University of California San Francisco; the National Institute of Mental Health; the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism; and the National Institute on Aging. Its authors have no known ties to Pfizer or its manufacturer.
Dr. Jeffrey B. Lechleiter, an internist and author of "About the New World Order: The Rise of a New World Order," has a longtime commitment to health care. He has written for The New York Times, The New England Journal of Medicine, and the New England Journal of Medicine.
"It is my hope that our findings will encourage other researchers to conduct more extensive studies into the treatment of erectile dysfunction," he said. "Pfizer, the manufacturer of Viagra, has invested heavily in research into these areas. It is certainly a step forward in discovering new ways to treat this disease."
The University of California, San Francisco researchers who were studying Cialis have a new paper on Cialis that appeared inThe research was funded by the Department of Defense's National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institutes of Health. The researchers are conducting the first clinical trial of a drug known as a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, known as sildenafil, to treat ED.The study, "Viagra vs. Cialis," will involve the first phase of the study to be done at the University of California San Francisco.
