A New York-based company has been granted a licence to sell Viagra, a new drug for erectile dysfunction and two other erectile dysfunction drugs.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is now required to take action against the companies which have engaged in the marketing of Viagra and the medicines used in the erection drug industry.
These companies were fined $1.6 million and fined $1.2 million.

The medicines used in the erectile dysfunction treatment include sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra).
Viagra is marketed by Pfizer Inc. as a treatment for the sexual disorder in which men are unable to have an erection. In 2002, Pfizer launched its own drug named Viagra, which was approved to treat erectile dysfunction.
Although Pfizer is the world’s largest manufacturer of erectile dysfunction drugs, the UK’s most popular treatment is also widely available on the NHS, although there is currently no such treatment for ED in the UK.
Dr Andrew McCullough, head of pharmacy at Pfizer, said: “There is now significant demand for treatments for erectile dysfunction, which are accessible in the UK and globally.
“This is where the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is now required to take the lead and ensure that the products are safe and suitable for patients and healthcare professionals, which is our role.

The MHRA was established in 1942 to deal with the problem of men’s inability to achieve and/or maintain erections sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse.
About one in five men in the UK suffer from erectile dysfunction and about 15% of men are affected by the problem.
The MHRA has the authority to supply Viagra, Cialis and Levitra to patients in the UK.
